An enclosed cargo trailer is a great way to transport your load safely and securely. These units offer protection from both the weather and potential theft. Knowing you want to buy one is a great start. But knowing which model is best for you is another task completely. We’ve created the following buying guide to help you narrow down your search! If you have any questions or you want to check out some trailers for sale, give us a call at Victory Custom Trailers in Metamora, Michigan. We are proud to serve Detroit, Flint, and everywhere in between!

The Size

A good jumping off point when searching for an enclosed cargo trailer is the size. You’ll want to think about how large you need your unit to be. Most models are either five, six, seven, or eight and a half feet wide and between eight and 32 feet long.

The idea is to get a good middle ground. You don’t want to overestimate your needs and end up paying for a larger unit than you need. But you don’t want to underestimate your needs and end up with a trailer much too small for your cargo. Try your best to accurately estimate the space needed for your current and future loads.

The Height

Next, you should consider the height of your ideal enclosed cargo trailer. The taller the model, the more storage space you’ll get. However, increased height also means increased drag. It can also decrease your rear view vision. Try to match the enclosed trailer’s height to your tow vehicle’s height. Another option is to choose the lowest height that still works for your needs.

The Material

You will also need to think about the ideal material for your needs. In general, enclosed cargo trailers are made of either steel or aluminum. Aluminum models are lighter and easier to tow. You’ll need less fuel to move this type of unit. Aluminum is also more durable against rust.

On the other hand, steel is more durable against damage. It will last longer before needing to be replaced. It will also be easier to find a welder who is experienced in working with steel in the event you need to do some repairs.

The Outer Skin

The next step is to figure out what outer skin thickness will work best for you. Thinner skin is more affordable while thicker skin is more durable and less prone to temperature changes. When making this decision for your enclosed trailer, factor in how long you plan to use the unit as well as the environmental conditions it will be exposed to. For example, if you want something that can last for years to come and/or will be subjected to tough weather conditions, you should get a thicker outer skin.

The Roof

When it comes to enclosed trailer roofs, there are two main options: flat and rounded. Flat roofs are more affordable, but collect rainwater easily. Rounded roofs cost more, but they allow rain and debris to roll off easier. This will make maintenance and cleaning easier as well. Models with rounded roofs tend to have a taller internal height too.

The Budget

The last thing you need to consider when buying an enclosed cargo trailer is how much you’re willing and able to spend. If you are on a tight budget, we recommend looking at used units. Because of depreciation, these models will cost less. With some research, you can find a reliable used option.

If you have a larger budget, you can get a new, higher quality unit that will last many years. You can even invest in a custom trailer! It is in our name after all. We can help design something that meets your specific needs.
